Ce gène est l'un des nombreux gènes de cytokines regroupés sur le bras q du chromosome 17. Les cytokines sont une famille de protéines sécrétées impliquées dans les processus immunorégulateurs et inflammatoires. Les cytokines CC sont des protéines caractérisées par deux cystéines adjacentes. La cytokine codée par ce gène présente une activité chimiotactique pour les lymphocytes et les monocytes, mais pas pour les neutrophiles. Cette cytokine présente également une activité myélosuppressive puissante et supprime la prolifération des cellules progénitrices myéloïdes.
