Ce gène code un membre de la famille des cystéine-aspartate protéases (caspases). L'activation séquentielle des caspases joue un rôle central dans la phase d'exécution de l'apoptose cellulaire. Les caspases existent sous forme de proenzymes inactives qui subissent un clivage protéolytique au niveau de résidus aspartiques conservés pour produire deux sous-unités, grande et petite, qui se dimérisent pour former l'enzyme active. Cette caspase a été montrée comme étant traitée et activée par la caspase 8 et la caspase 10 in vitro, et par un anticorps agoniste anti-Fas ou le ligand induisant l'apoptose lié au TNF in vivo. L'expression et le traitement de cette caspase pourraient être impliqués dans la différenciation terminale des kératinocytes, ce qui est important pour la formation de la barrière cutanée.
