La protéine de liaison à la méthyl-CpG 2 (MeCP2), dont la fonction exacte n'est pas claire. La protéine MeCP2 régule généralement les gènes impliqués dans la fonction cérébrale, même si cette protéine est présente dans tout le corps.Dans le cerveau, la protéine MeCP2 est importante pour le fonctionnement des cellules nerveuses (neurones) et est présente à des niveaux élevés dans les neurones matures. Cette protéine joue probablement un rôle dans le maintien des connexions (synapses) entre les neurones, où la communication intercellulaire a lieu. De nombreux gènes connus pour être régulés par la protéine MeCP2 jouent un rôle dans le fonctionnement normal du cerveau, en particulier le maintien des synapses.
