La protéine 1 de liaison à UL16 (ULBP1) est une glycoprotéine de surface cellulaire codée par le gène ULBP1 situé sur le chromosome 6. La protéine codée par ce gène est un ligand du groupe 2 de cellules tueuses naturelles, membre D (NKG2D), un récepteur activateur du système immunitaire sur les cellules NK et les cellules T. La liaison du ligand codé à NKG2D conduit à l'activation de plusieurs voies de transduction du signal, y compris celles de JAK2, STAT5, ERK et PI3K kinase/Akt. De plus, dans les cellules infectées par le cytomégalovirus, ce ligand se lie à la glycoprotéine UL16 et est empêché d'activer le système immunitaire. Trois variantes de transcrits codant pour différentes isoformes ont été trouvées pour ce gène.
