Ce gène code pour une protéine de la famille à motif tripartite (TRIM). Le motif TRIM comprend des domaines de liaison au zinc, une région à doigt de zinc (RING finger), un motif B-box et un domaine enroulé-enroulé (coiled-coil). Il est rapporté que TRIM46 est impliqué dans la prolifération de plusieurs types de cellules cancéreuses, y compris les cancers du poumon et du sein. Il a également été démontré qu'il contrôle la polarité neuronale et la spécification des axones en formant des faisceaux uniformes de microtubules dans l'axone.
