L'absorption de photons déclenche une cascade de signalisation dans les photorécepteurs à bâtonnets qui active la phosphodiestérase cGMP (PDE), entraînant l'hydrolyse rapide du cGMP, la fermeture des canaux cationiques à porte cGMP et l'hyperpolarisation de la cellule. La PDE est une enzyme hétérotrimérique à membrane périphérique composée de sous-unités alpha, bêta et gamma. Ce gène code la sous-unité bêta. Les mutations de ce gène entraînent la rétinite pigmentaire et l'héméralopie stationnaire congénitale autosomique dominante. Plusieurs variants de transcription codant différentes isoformes ont été trouvés pour ce gène.
