BGLAP encodes bone gamma-carboxyglutamate protein, better known as osteocalcin (OC/BGP), a vitamin K-dependent osteoblast-secreted protein of mineralized bone matrix.
Biological function: Osteocalcin undergoes vitamin K-dependent gamma-carboxylation, enabling binding to calcium and hydroxyapatite. The carboxylated protein is a major non-collagenous component of bone matrix and contributes to bone formation and remodelling biology.
