La protéine encodée par ce gène est une glycoprotéine transmembranaire de type II, non limitée par la lignée, qui synthétise et hydrolyse le cyclique adénosine 5'-diphosphate-ribose, un messager mobilisant les ions calcium intracellulaires. La libération de protéines solubles et la capacité des protéines liées à la membrane à être internalisées indiquent des fonctions extracellulaires et intracellulaires pour la protéine. Cette protéine possède une queue cytoplasmique N-terminale, un seul domaine transmembranaire et une région extracellulaire C-terminale avec quatre sites de N-glycosylation. L'analyse de la structure cristalline démontre que la molécule fonctionnelle est un dimère, dont la partie centrale contient le site catalytique. Elle est utilisée comme marqueur pronostique pour les patients atteints de leucémie lymphoïde chronique. L'épissage alternatif entraîne de multiples variants de transcrits.
