La protéine interagit directement avec le facteur d'initiation de la traduction eucaryote 4E (eIF4E), qui est un composant limitant du complexe multi-sous-unités qui recrute les sous-unités ribosomiques 40S à l'extrémité 5' des ARNm. L'interaction de cette protéine avec eIF4E inhibe l'assemblage du complexe et réprime la traduction. Cette protéine est phosphorylée en réponse à divers signaux, notamment l'irradiation UV et la signalisation de l'insuline, ce qui entraîne sa dissociation d'eIF4E et l'activation de la traduction de l'ARNm.
