ALDOA encodes aldolase, fructose-bisphosphate A; reviewed UniProt names the protein fructose-bisphosphate aldolase A. Also known as muscle-type aldolase, it is a class I glycolytic enzyme that reversibly cleaves fructose 1,6-bisphosphate into glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate and dihydroxyacetone phosphate.
Biological function: Fructose-bisphosphate aldolase A catalyses a central reversible step in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, interconverting fructose 1,6-bisphosphate with two triose phosphates. Reviewed UniProt also supports non-catalytic and scaffolding roles linked to metabolic responses to glucose availability.
