ATG4A

autophagy related 4A cysteine peptidase

ATG4A (autophagy related 4A cysteine peptidase), also called cysteine protease ATG4A or autophagin-2, is an ATG4-family cysteine protease that regulates ATG8-family protein processing during macroautophagy.

About ATG4A

Target information is kept separate from product-level validation so you can review the biology and the reagent evidence independently.

Biology

Biological function

ATG4A is a peptidase family C54 cysteine protease involved in the proteolytic processing of ATG8-family proteins. ATG4-family enzymes expose the C-terminal glycine needed for ATG8 lipidation and can reverse lipidation, helping regulate autophagosome membrane dynamics and autophagic flux.

Experimental context

Research context

ATG4A is studied as a regulator of macroautophagy, including ATG8-family processing, autophagosome maturation and autophagic flux. Experimental interpretation should consider overlapping ATG4-family activity, cell context and the specific ATG8-family substrate or assay used.
