ATG4A (autophagy related 4A cysteine peptidase), also called cysteine protease ATG4A or autophagin-2, is an ATG4-family cysteine protease that regulates ATG8-family protein processing during macroautophagy.
Biological function: ATG4A is a peptidase family C54 cysteine protease involved in the proteolytic processing of ATG8-family proteins. ATG4-family enzymes expose the C-terminal glycine needed for ATG8 lipidation and can reverse lipidation, helping regulate autophagosome membrane dynamics and autophagic flux.
