Biological function

AHR is a ligand-activated basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor. After ligand binding it translocates to the nucleus, heterodimerizes with ARNT and binds xenobiotic-response elements to regulate target genes, including xenobiotic-metabolising enzymes such as CYP1A1. AHR signalling also contributes to broader developmental, metabolic and immune regulatory programmes.

Research context

AHR is widely investigated in xenobiotic sensing, toxicology, environmental response, barrier and immune biology, metabolism and cell-differentiation studies. Its activity depends on ligand context as well as receptor abundance, so experiments should distinguish expression from pathway activation and select reagents according to species, sample type, assay format and product-level validation.
