CA2 catalyses the reversible interconversion of carbon dioxide and water with bicarbonate and protons. Its high catalytic efficiency supports rapid CO2/bicarbonate equilibration and acid-base homeostasis, and CA2 can participate in membrane-associated bicarbonate-transport complexes despite being primarily cytosolic.
