ACSL4 catalyses activation of long-chain fatty acids to fatty acyl-CoA esters for cellular lipid synthesis and fatty-acid degradation. NCBI and reviewed UniProt describe a preference for arachidonate; UniProt also identifies ACSL4 as a ferroptosis activator by generating activated polyunsaturated-fatty-acid substrates that can undergo lipid peroxidation.
