Product description

Master regulator of synaptic plasticity that self-assembles into virion-like capsids that encapsulate RNAs and mediate intercellular RNA transfer in the nervous system. ARC protein is released from neurons in extracellular vesicles that mediate the transfer of ARC mRNA into new target cells, where ARC mRNA can undergo activity-dependent translation. ARC capsids are endocytosed and are able to transfer ARC mRNA into the cytoplasm of neurons.

For research use only.

Research target context

ARCactivity regulated cytoskeleton associated protein

View target guide

Activity regulated cytoskeleton associated protein (ARC; Arc/Arg3.1) is an activity-induced neuronal protein and master regulator of synaptic plasticity. This catalogue-backed ABMIUM record links human ARC (NCBI Gene 23237; UniProt Q7LC44) to research reagents.

Biological function: ARC is rapidly induced by neuronal activity and supports protein-synthesis-dependent forms of long-term potentiation and depression, receptor trafficking and long-term memory. ARC can self-assemble into virus-like capsids that package RNA and participate in intercellular RNA transfer.
