AIFM1 functions both as NADH oxidoreductase and as regulator of apoptosis. In response to apoptotic stimuli, it is released from the mitochondrion intermembrane space into the cytosol and to the nucleus, where it functions as a proapoptotic factor in a caspase-independent pathway. Release into the cytoplasm is mediated upon binding to poly-ADP-ribose chains.

AIFM1 is apoptosis inducing factor mitochondria associated 1, encoding the mitochondrial apoptosis-inducing factor 1 (AIF). It is a mitochondrial flavoprotein with oxidoreductase activity that can also participate in caspase-independent cell-death pathways after release from mitochondria.
Biological function: AIFM1 functions as a mitochondrial NADH oxidoreductase and contributes to mitochondrial physiology. Following defined cell-death stimuli, apoptosis-inducing factor 1 can be released from the mitochondrial intermembrane space and translocate toward the nucleus, where it contributes to caspase-independent chromatin condensation and DNA fragmentation.
