Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is a counter-regulatory carboxypeptidase of the renin-angiotensin system. It converts angiotensin I to angiotensin-(1-9) and angiotensin II to angiotensin-(1-7), helping counterbalance classical angiotensin II signalling and supporting cardiovascular homeostasis. ACE2 also functions as a cellular receptor for HCoV-NL63, SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins.
