Rantes (regulated on activation normal T cell expressed and secreted) ist einer der natürlichen Liganden für den Chemokinrezeptor CCR5 und unterdrückt in vitro die Replikation der R5-Stämme von HIV-1, die CCR5 als Korezeptor verwenden. Periphere mononukleäre Blutzellen oder CD4 (+)-Lymphozyten, die von verschiedenen Individuen gewonnen wurden, weisen große Variationen in ihrer Fähigkeit auf, RANTES zu sezernieren. Das Rantes-Genprodukt wird auf 10 kDa geschätzt und nach Abspaltung des Signalpeptids auf etwa 8 kDa. Von den 68 Resten sind 4 Cysteine, und es gibt keine Stellen für N-verknüpfte Glykosylierung. Rantes wird von kultivierten T-Zelllinien exprimiert, die Ag-spezifisch und wachstumsfaktorabhängig sind.
