Die Endotheline sind eine Familie von strukturell und pharmakologisch unterschiedlichen Peptiden, die beim Menschen identifiziert und sequenziert wurden. Drei Isoformen von humanem Endothelin wurden identifiziert: Endothelin-1, -2 und -3. Endothelin-1 ist ein potentes, 21-Aminosäure-Vasokonstriktor-Peptid, das von vaskulären Endothelzellen produziert wird. Endotheline sind 21-Aminosäure-Vasokonstriktor-Peptide, die hauptsächlich im Endothel produziert werden und eine Schlüsselrolle bei der vaskulären Homöostase spielen. Endotheline sind an Gefäßkrankheiten mehrerer Organsysteme beteiligt, darunter Herz, allgemeiner Kreislauf und Gehirn. Endotheline sind Proteine, die Blutgefäße verengen und den Blutdruck erhöhen. Sie werden normalerweise durch andere Mechanismen im Gleichgewicht gehalten, aber wenn sie übermäßig exprimiert werden, tragen sie zu hohem Blutdruck (Hypertonie) und Herzkrankheiten bei.
