Product description

The carboxylated form is one of the main organic components of the bone matrix, which constitutes 1-2% of the total bone protein. BGLAP acts as a negative regulator of bone formation and is required to limit bone formation without impairing bone resorption or mineralization. BGLAP binds strongly to apatite and calcium upon gamma-carboxylation; this modification is essential for bone metabolism.

For research use only.

Research target context

BGLAPbone gamma-carboxyglutamate protein

View target guide

BGLAP encodes bone gamma-carboxyglutamate protein, better known as osteocalcin (OC/BGP), a vitamin K-dependent osteoblast-secreted protein of mineralized bone matrix.

Biological function: Osteocalcin undergoes vitamin K-dependent gamma-carboxylation, enabling binding to calcium and hydroxyapatite. The carboxylated protein is a major non-collagenous component of bone matrix and contributes to bone formation and remodelling biology.
