Der vaskuläre endotheliale Wachstumsfaktor B, auch bekannt als VEGF-B, ist ein Protein, das beim Menschen vom VEGF-B-Gen kodiert wird. VEGF-B ist ein Wachstumsfaktor, der zur Familie der vaskulären endothelialen Wachstumsfaktoren gehört, deren bekanntestes Mitglied VEGF-A ist. Im Gegensatz zu VEGF-A spielt VEGF-B eine weniger ausgeprägte Rolle im Gefäßsystem: Während VEGF-A für die Bildung von Blutgefäßen, z. B. während der Entwicklung oder bei pathologischen Zuständen, wichtig ist, scheint VEGF-B nur eine Rolle bei der Aufrechterhaltung neu gebildeter Blutgefäße unter pathologischen Bedingungen zu spielen. Es spielt auch eine wichtige Rolle bei verschiedenen Arten von Neuronen. Und es ist wichtig für den Schutz von Neuronen in der Netzhaut und der Hirnrinde während eines Schlaganfalls und von Motoneuronen während Motoneuronerkrankungen wie der amyotrophen Lateralsklerose.
