Das Serum-Amyloid-A-Protein (SAA), auch bekannt als SAA1, ist ein Protein, das beim Menschen durch das SAA1-Gen kodiert wird. Dieses Gen kodiert ein Mitglied der Serum-Amyloid-A-Familie der Apolipoproteine. Es ist auf 11p15.1 kartiert. SAA ist ein wichtiges Akutphasenprotein, das als Reaktion auf Entzündungen und Gewebeschäden stark exprimiert wird. Dieses Protein spielt auch eine wichtige Rolle im HDL-Stoffwechsel und in der Cholesterin-Homöostase. Hohe Konzentrationen dieses Proteins sind mit chronisch entzündlichen Erkrankungen wie Atherosklerose, rheumatoider Arthritis, Alzheimer-Krankheit und Morbus Crohn verbunden. Dieses Protein kann auch ein potenzieller Biomarker für bestimmte Tumore sein.
