Die 92-kD-Typ-IV-Kollagenase ist auch bekannt als 92-kD-Gelatinase, Typ-V-Kollagenase, Gelatinase B oder Matrix-Metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9). Die 72- und 92-kDa-Typ-IV-Kollagenasen gehören zu einer Gruppe sezernierter Zink-Metalloproteasen.1 Die Matrix-Metalloproteinasen (MMPs) sind in der Lage, die extrazelluläre Matrix abzubauen und Angiogenese sowie Tumorinvasion zu ermöglichen. Gelatinase B, eine Matrix-Metalloproteinase, die proteolytische Aktivität gegen Bindegewebsproteine besitzt, wird als wichtig für die Bindegewebsumbauprozesse angesehen, die mit Atherogenese und Plaque-Ruptur verbunden sind. MMP-9 wird hauptsächlich in Neutrophilen, Makrophagen und Mastzellen exprimiert, und nicht in Onkogen-positiven neoplastischen Zellen. Der Polymorphismus von MMP-9 fungiert als genetischer Faktor für die Entwicklung eines rauchbedingten Lungenemphysems.
