Chitinase-3-ähnliches Protein 1, auch CHI3L1 oder YKL-40 genannt, ist ein sezerniertes Glykoprotein von ca. 40 kDa Größe, das beim Menschen durch das CHI3L1-Gen kodiert wird. Dieses Gen ist auf 1q32.1 kartiert. Chitinase katalysieren die Hydrolyse von Chitin, einem reichlich vorhandenen Glykopolymer, das in Insektenskeletten und Pilzzellwänden vorkommt. Die Glycosidhydrolase 18-Familie der Chitinase umfasst acht menschliche Familienmitglieder. Dieses Gen kodiert ein Glykoprotein-Mitglied der Glycosylhydrolase 18-Familie. Das Protein besitzt keine Chitinaseaktivität und wird von aktivierten Makrophagen, Chondrozyten, Neutrophilen und Synovialzellen sezerniert. Es wird angenommen, dass das Protein eine Rolle bei Entzündungsprozessen und der Gewebereparatur spielt.
