Bone morphogenetic protein 10 (BMP10; BMP-10) is a secreted TGF-beta superfamily ligand with prominent cardiovascular biology. It signals through type I BMP/activin receptors, particularly ACVRL1/ALK1, to regulate SMAD-dependent programmes involved in cardiac and vascular development.
Biological function: BMP10 is synthesized as a preproprotein and proteolytically processed to a mature secreted ligand. Reviewed UniProt supports signalling through ACVRL1/ALK1, BMPR1A/ALK3 and BMPR1B/ALK6 with activation of SMAD1, SMAD5 and SMAD8. Curated evidence links BMP10 to maintenance of embryonic cardiomyocyte proliferation and regulation of heart morphogenesis, while endothelial responses include control of migration and growth.
