Das atriale natriuretische Peptid (ANP), auch bekannt als NPPA oder PND, ist ein starker Vasodilatator und ein von Herzmuskelzellen ausgeschüttetes Protein (Polypeptid)-Hormon. Dieses Gen ist auf 1p36.22 kartiert. Es ist an der homöostatischen Kontrolle von Körperwasser, Natrium, Kalium und Fett (Fettgewebe) beteiligt. ANP wird von Muskelzellen in den oberen Herzkammern (Vorhöfen) des Herzens (Vorhofmyozyten) als Reaktion auf hohes Blutvolumen freigesetzt. Es wirkt darauf hin, die Wasser-, Natrium- und Fettlasten auf das Kreislaufsystem zu reduzieren und dadurch den Blutdruck zu senken. ANP hat genau die entgegengesetzte Funktion des von der Zona glomerulosa ausgeschütteten Aldosterons in Bezug auf seine Wirkung auf Natrium in der Niere – das heißt, Aldosteron stimuliert die Natriumretention und es erzeugt Natriumverlust.
