Integrin alpha-5 ist ein Protein, das beim Menschen durch das ITGA5-Gen kodiert wird. Das Produkt dieses Gens gehört zur Familie der Integrin-alpha-Ketten. Integrine sind heterodimere integrale Membranproteine, die aus einer Alpha- und einer Beta-Untereinheit bestehen und an der Zelloberflächenadhäsion und Signalübertragung beteiligt sind. Das kodierte Präproprotein wird proteolytisch prozessiert, um leichte und schwere Ketten zu erzeugen, die die Alpha-5-Untereinheit bilden. Diese Untereinheit assoziiert mit der Beta-1-Untereinheit, um einen Fibronektinrezeptor zu bilden. Dieses Integrin kann die Tumorinvasion fördern, und eine höhere Expression dieses Gens könnte mit einer kürzeren Überlebenszeit bei Lungenkrebspatienten korrelieren. Es ist zu beachten, dass die Integrin-alpha-5- und Integrin-alpha-V-Untereinheiten durch unterschiedliche Gene kodiert werden.
