Interleukin 33 (IL-33) ist ein Zytokin, das zur IL-1-Superfamilie gehört. Das IL33-Gen kartiert mittels Genomdatenbankanalyse auf Chromosom 9p24.1. Rekombinantes reifes humanes IL33 band an ST2. Es wird angenommen, dass die Induktion von Typ-2-Zytokinen durch IL-33 in vivo die schweren pathologischen Veränderungen induziert, die in Schleimhautorganen nach Verabreichung von IL-33 beobachtet werden. IL33, ein von nekrotischen Zellen freigesetztes Alarminsignal, ist für potente CD8+-T-Zell- (CTL) Reaktionen auf replizierende, prototypische RNA- und DNA-Viren bei Mäusen notwendig.
