Das Monozyten-Chemoattraktionsprotein-1 (MCP-1), ein Mitglied der Chemokin-(chemotaktische Zytokin)-Familie, ist ein potenter Monozyten-Agonist, der durch oxidierte Lipide hochreguliert wird. MCP-1 ist auch bekannt als CCL2, SCYA2, MCAF. MCAF ist ein Mitglied einer Familie von Faktoren, die an Immun- und Entzündungsreaktionen beteiligt sind. Die aus der Nukleotidsequenz abgeleitete Aminosäuresequenz zeigt, dass die Primärstruktur des MCAF-Vorläufers aus einer mutmaßlichen Signalpeptidsequenz von 23 Aminosäureresten und einer reifen MCAF-Sequenz von 76 Aminosäureresten besteht. MCP-1 spielt eine einzigartige und entscheidende Rolle bei der Entstehung von Atherosklerose und könnte ein neues therapeutisches Ziel bei dieser Erkrankung darstellen. Humanes MCP-1 ist ein 8,7 KDa schweres Nicht-Glykoprotein, das in der Vorläuferform aus 99 Aminosäuren und in der reifen Form aus 76 Aminosäuren besteht.
