Dieses Gen kodiert ein Enzym, das am ersten Schritt der Glykosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-Anker-Biosynthese beteiligt ist. Der GPI-Anker ist ein Glykolipid, das auf vielen Blutzellen vorkommt und dazu dient, Proteine an der Zelloberfläche zu verankern. Das kodierte Protein ist eine Komponente des GPI-N-Acetylglucosaminyltransferase-Komplexes, der die Übertragung von N-Acetylglucosamin (GlcNAc) von UDP-GlcNAc auf Phosphatidylinositol (PI) katalysiert. Dieses Gen befindet sich in der kritischen Region des Down-Syndroms auf Chromosom 21 und ist ein Kandidat für die Pathogenese des Down-Syndroms. Dieses Gen besitzt mehrere Pseudogene und ist Mitglied der Phosphatidylinositol-Glykan-Anker-Biosynthese-Genfamilie.
