Das Produkt dieses Gens ist ein Membranprotein, das auf der Oberfläche von Oligodendrozyten und der äußersten Oberfläche von Myelinscheiden exprimiert wird. Aufgrund dieser Lokalisation ist es ein primäres Zielantigen, das an der immunvermittelten Demyelinisierung beteiligt ist. Dieses Protein könnte an der Fertigstellung und Aufrechterhaltung der Myelinscheide sowie an der Zell-Zell-Kommunikation beteiligt sein.
