Das durch dieses Gen kodierte Protein gehört zur Familie der Folatrezeptoren (FOLR), und diese Gene liegen in einem Cluster auf Chromosom 11 vor. Mitglieder dieser Genfamilie haben eine hohe Affinität zu Folsäure und mehreren reduzierten Folsäurederivaten und vermitteln die Lieferung von 5-Methyltetrahydrofolat in das Zellinnere. Dieses Protein weist eine Sequenzhomologie von 68 % und 79 % mit den Proteinen FOLR1 bzw. FOLR3 auf. Obwohl ursprünglich angenommen wurde, dass dieses Protein plazentaspezifisch ist, kann es auch in anderen Geweben vorkommen und könnte eine Rolle beim Transport von Methotrexat in synovialen Makrophagen bei Patienten mit rheumatoider Arthritis spielen. Für dieses Gen wurden mehrere Transkriptvarianten gefunden, die dasselbe Protein kodieren. [bereitgestellt von RefSeq, Juli 2008].
