Dieses Gen kodiert für ein Mitglied der Claudin-Familie. Claudine sind integrale Membranproteine und Bestandteile von Tight-Junction-Strängen. Tight-Junction-Stränge dienen als physikalische Barriere, um zu verhindern, dass gelöste Stoffe und Wasser frei durch den parazellulären Raum zwischen Epithel- oder Endothelzellschichten gelangen, und spielen auch eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Aufrechterhaltung der Zellpolarität und der Signaltransduktion. Dieses Gen wird in Keimzentrums-B-Zellen, Plazenta und Magen sowie in Kolontumoren exprimiert. Dieses Gen ist bei intestinalem Typ des Magenkrebses herunterreguliert.
