Carboanhydrasen (CAs) sind eine große Familie von Zink-Metalloenzymen, die die reversible Hydratation von Kohlendioxid katalysieren. Sie sind an einer Vielzahl biologischer Prozesse beteiligt, darunter Atmung, Kalzifizierung, Säure-Basen-Gleichgewicht, Knochenresorption und die Bildung von Kammerwasser, Liquor cerebrospinalis, Speichel und Magensäure. Sie zeigen eine große Vielfalt in der Gewebeverteilung und in ihrer subzellulären Lokalisation. CA XI ist wahrscheinlich ein sezerniertes Protein, jedoch machen radikale Veränderungen an den aktiven Stellen, die bei CA-Isozymen mit katalytischer Aktivität vollständig konserviert sind, es unwahrscheinlich, dass es eine Carboanhydrase-Aktivität besitzt. Es teilt Eigenschaften mit zwei anderen azatalytischen CA-Isoformen, CA VIII und CA X.
