Zentromer- und Kinetochorproteine spielen eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Zentromerstruktur, der Kinetochorbildung und der Trennung von Schwesterchromatiden. Das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein kolokalisiert mit den inneren Kinetochorplattenproteinen CENP-A und CENP-C sowohl in der Interphase als auch in der Metaphase. Es lokalisiert außerhalb des zentromeren Heterochromatins, wo CENP-B lokalisiert ist, und innerhalb der Kinetochorkorona, wo CENP-E während der Prometaphase lokalisiert ist. Es wird angenommen, dass dieses Protein an sich selbst sowie an CENP-A, CENP-B oder CENP-C binden kann. Multimere des Proteins lokalisieren konstitutiv zur inneren Kinetochorplatte und spielen eine wichtige Rolle bei der Organisation und Funktion des aktiven Zentromer-Kinetochor-Komplexes.
