Dieses Gen kodiert ein Mitglied der NAD-abhängigen Glycerin-3-phosphat-Dehydrogenase-Familie. Das kodierte Protein spielt eine entscheidende Rolle im Kohlenhydrat- und Lipidstoffwechsel, indem es die reversible Umwandlung von Dihydroxyacetonphosphat (DHAP) und reduziertem Nicotinadenindinukleotid (NADH) in Glycerin-3-phosphat (G3P) und NAD+ katalysiert. Das kodierte zytosolische Protein und die mitochondriale Glycerin-3-phosphat-Dehydrogenase bilden auch einen Glycerinphosphat-Shuttle, der den Transfer von Reduktionsäquivalenten vom Zytosol zu den Mitochondrien erleichtert. Mutationen in diesem Gen sind eine Ursache für die transiente infantile Hypertriglyceridämie.
