Dieses intronlose Gen soll durch Retrotransposition einer vollständig prozessierten PCBP-2-mRNA entstanden sein. Dieses Gen und PCBP-2 haben Paraloge (PCBP3 und PCBP4), die vermutlich durch Duplikationsereignisse ganzer Gene entstanden sind. Das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein scheint multifunktional zu sein. Es bildet zusammen mit PCBP-2 und hnRNPK das wichtigste zelluläre Poly(rC)-bindende Protein. Es enthält drei K-homologe (KH) Domänen, die an der RNA-Bindung beteiligt sein könnten. Dieses kodierte Protein fungiert zusammen mit PCBP-2 auch als translationaler Coaktivator der Poliovirus-RNA über eine sequenzspezifische Wechselwirkung mit der Stammschleife IV des IRES und fördert die Poliovirus-RNA-Replikation durch Bindung an seine 5'-terminale Kleeblattstruktur. Es wurde auch in die Translationskontrolle der 15-Lipoxygenase-mRNA, der menschlichen Papillomavirus-Typ-16-L2-mRNA und der Hepatitis-A-Virus-RNA involviert. Th
