Hemidesmosomen sind Strukturen, die die Basallamina mit dem Intermediärfilament-Zytoskelett verbinden. Eine wichtige funktionelle Komponente von Hemidesmosomen ist die Integrin-Beta-4-Untereinheit (ITGB4), ein Protein, das zwei Fibronektin-Typ-III-Domänen enthält. Das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein bindet an die Fibronektin-Typ-III-Domänen von ITGB4 und kann dazu beitragen, ITGB4 mit dem Intermediärfilament-Zytoskelett zu verbinden. Das kodierte Protein, das unlöslich ist und sowohl im Zellkern als auch im Zytoplasma vorkommt, kann als Translationsinitiationsfaktor fungieren und die Assoziation der 40S- und 60S-Ribosomenuntereinheiten verhindern. Für dieses Gen wurden mehrere nicht-proteinkodierende Transkriptvarianten und Varianten, die zwei verschiedene Isoformen kodieren, gefunden. [bereitgestellt von RefSeq, Jun 2012]
