Das kodierte Protein ist Cadherin-ähnlich und besteht aus einer extrazellulären Region mit 7 Cadherin-Domänen und einer Transmembranregion, aber ohne die konservierte zytoplasmatische Domäne. Das Protein ist ein Bestandteil des Magen-Darm-Trakts und der Bauchspeicheldrüsenkanäle und fungiert als intestinaler protonenabhängiger Peptidtransporter im ersten Schritt der oralen Absorption vieler medizinisch wichtiger peptidbasierter Medikamente.
