Das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein ist ein Mitglied der Unterfamilie der Dual-Spezifität-Proteinphosphatase. Diese Phosphatasen inaktivieren ihre Zielkinasen, indem sie sowohl die Phosphoserin-/Threonin- als auch die Phosphotyrosinreste dephosphorylieren. Sie regulieren negativ Mitglieder der mitogenaktivierten Protein (MAP)-Kinase-Superfamilie (MAPK/ERK, SAPK/JNK, p38), die mit Zellproliferation und -differenzierung assoziiert sind. Verschiedene Mitglieder der Familie der Dual-Spezifität-Phosphatasen zeigen unterschiedliche Substratspezifitäten für verschiedene MAP-Kinasen, unterschiedliche Gewebeverteilung und subzelluläre Lokalisation sowie unterschiedliche Induzierbarkeitsmodi ihrer Expression durch extrazelluläre Stimuli. Dieses Genprodukt inaktiviert ERK1, ERK2 und JNK, wird in einer Vielzahl von Geweben exprimiert und ist im Zellkern lokalisiert. Zwei alternativ gespleißte Transkriptvarianten, die unterschiedliche Isoformen kodieren, wurden beobachtet.
