Dieses Gen kodiert ein Protein, das die Synthese von 2-Hydroxysphingolipiden katalysiert, einer Untergruppe von Sphingolipiden, die 2-Hydroxyfettsäuren enthalten. Sphingolipide spielen eine Rolle in vielen zellulären Prozessen, und ihre strukturelle Vielfalt entsteht durch Modifikation des hydrophoben Ceramid-Anteils, wie z.B. durch 2-Hydroxylierung der N-Acylkette, und die Existenz vieler verschiedener Kopfgruppen. Mutationen in diesem Gen wurden mit Leukodystrophie, Demyelinisierung mit spastischer Paraparese mit oder ohne Dystonie in Verbindung gebracht.[bereitgestellt von RefSeq, März 2010]
