Das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein gehört zur Genfamilie der SAC-Domänen-enthaltenden Proteine. Die SAC-Domäne, etwa 400 Aminosäuren lang und aus sieben konservierten Motiven bestehend, besitzt eine Phosphoinositid-Phosphatase-Aktivität. Das Hefe-Homolog, Sac1p, ist an der Regulation verschiedener Phosphoinositide beteiligt und beeinflusst diverse zelluläre Funktionen wie die Organisation des Aktin-Zytoskeletts, die Golgi-Funktion und die Aufrechterhaltung der Vakuolenmorphologie. Membrangebundene Phosphoinositide fungieren als Signalmoleküle und spielen eine Schlüsselrolle beim Vesikeltransport in eukaryotischen Zellen. Mutationen in diesem Gen wurden mit der Charcot-Marie-Tooth-Krankheit Typ 4J in Verbindung gebracht. [bereitgestellt von RefSeq, Juli 2008].
