Zyxin besitzt eine N-terminale, prolinreiche Domäne und drei LIM-Domänen in seiner C-terminalen Hälfte. Die prolinreiche Domäne kann mit SH3-Domänen von Proteinen interagieren, die an Signaltransduktionswegen beteiligt sind, während die LIM-Domänen wahrscheinlich an Protein-Protein-Bindungen beteiligt sind. Zyxin könnte als Botenstoff im Signaltransduktionsweg fungieren, der adhäsionsstimulierte Veränderungen in der Genexpression vermittelt und die zytoskelettale Organisation von Aktinbündeln modulieren könnte.
