Dieses Gen kodiert ein Mitglied der Sirtuin-Proteinfamilie, Homologe des Hefe-Sir2-Proteins. Mitglieder der Sirtuin-Familie zeichnen sich durch eine Sirtuin-Kerndomäne aus und werden in vier Klassen eingeteilt. Die Funktionen der menschlichen Sirtuine wurden noch nicht bestimmt; es ist jedoch bekannt, dass Hefe-Sirtuin-Proteine die epigenetische Gen-Silencing regulieren und die Rekombination von rDNA unterdrücken. Studien legen nahe, dass die menschlichen Sirtuine als intrazelluläre regulatorische Proteine mit Mono-ADP-Ribosyltransferase-Aktivität fungieren könnten. Das durch dieses Gen kodierte Protein gehört zur Klasse I der Sirtuin-Familie.
