Hintergrund

Das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein gehört zur Familie der epidermalen Wachstumsfaktoren. Es ist ein autokriner Wachstumsfaktor sowie ein Mitogen für Astrozyten, Schwann-Zellen und Fibroblasten. Es ist verwandt mit dem epidermalen Wachstumsfaktor (EGF) und dem transformierenden Wachstumsfaktor alpha (TGF-alpha). Das Protein interagiert mit dem EGF/TGF-alpha-Rezeptor, um das Wachstum normaler Epithelzellen zu fördern, und hemmt das Wachstum bestimmter aggressiver Karzinomzelllinien. Es spielt auch eine Rolle bei der Entwicklung der Brustdrüse, der Oozyten und des Knochengewebes. Dieses Gen wird mit einem Psoriasis-ähnlichen Hautphänotyp und auch mit anderen pathologischen Störungen, einschließlich verschiedener Arten von Krebs und entzündlichen Erkrankungen, in Verbindung gebracht.
