Das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein ist ein Zelloberflächen-Glykoprotein und ein Typ-I-Membranprotein, das ursprünglich als myeloischer zellspezifischer Marker identifiziert wurde. Das kodierte Protein wurde einst als Rezeptor für C1q angesehen, wird aber heute stattdessen als an der interzellulären Adhäsion und an der Clearance apoptotischer Zellen beteiligt betrachtet. Es wurde festgestellt, dass der intrazelluläre zytoplasmatische Schwanz dieses Proteins mit Moesin interagiert, einem Protein, von dem bekannt ist, dass es eine Rolle bei der Verknüpfung von Transmembranproteinen mit dem Zytoskelett und bei der Umgestaltung des Zytoskeletts spielt.
