Das durch dieses Gen kodierte Protein gehört zur Familie der Fibroblasten-Wachstumsfaktoren (FGF). FGF-Familienmitglieder besitzen breite mitogene und zellüberlebensfördernde Aktivitäten und sind an einer Vielzahl biologischer Prozesse beteiligt, einschließlich Embryonalentwicklung, Zellwachstum, Morphogenese, Gewebereparatur, Tumorwachstum und -invasion. Dieses Protein ist bekanntermaßen ein Faktor, der das Androgen- und Verankerungs-unabhängige Wachstum von Mammakarzinomzellen unterstützt. Eine Überexpression dieses Gens wurde gezeigt, dass sie das Tumorwachstum und die Angiogenese erhöht. Die Expression dieses Gens bei Erwachsenen ist auf Hoden und Eierstöcke beschränkt. Das zeitliche und räumliche Muster der Genexpression deutet auf seine Funktion als embryonaler Epithelfaktor hin.
