Zytochrom b (-245) besteht aus der Zytochrom b alpha (CYBA)- und beta (CYBB)-Kette. Es wurde als Hauptbestandteil des mikrobiziden Oxidase-Systems von Phagozyten vorgeschlagen. Ein CYBB-Mangel ist einer von fünf beschriebenen biochemischen Defekten, die mit der chronischen Granulomatose (CGD) assoziiert sind. Bei dieser Erkrankung ist die Aktivität der Phagozyten-NADPH-Oxidase vermindert; neutrophile Granulozyten können Bakterien phagozytieren, sie aber in den phagozytischen Vakuolen nicht abtöten. Die Ursache des Abtötungsdefekts ist eine Unfähigkeit, die Zellatmung zu erhöhen, und ein daraus resultierendes Versagen, aktivierten Sauerstoff in die phagozytische Vakuole zu liefern.
