Die Acetylierung und Deacetylierung von Histonen, katalysiert durch Multisubunit-Komplexe, spielt eine Schlüsselrolle bei der Regulation der eukaryotischen Genexpression. Das von diesem Gen kodierte Protein gehört zur Familie der Histondeacetylase/Acuc/Apha und ist eine Komponente des Histondeacetylase-Komplexes. Es interagiert auch mit dem Retinoblastom-Tumorsuppressorprotein, und dieser Komplex ist ein Schlüsselelement bei der Kontrolle von Zellproliferation und -differenzierung.
